What Is the SAAQ Knowledge Test?
The SAAQ knowledge test (also called the theoretical knowledge test) is a computer-based exam administered at SAAQ service centres across Quebec. It tests your understanding of Quebec’s traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving behaviour.
You must pass it before you can receive your learner’s licence (permis d’apprenti) and begin supervised driving practice.

How Many Questions Are on the SAAQ Knowledge Test?
There are 60 questions total across the three modules. Each module has 20 questions. You will not be allowed to move back to a previous module once you’ve completed it, so treat each section as its own mini-exam.
What Happens If You Fail a Module?
If you fail one or more modules, you can retake only the modules you failed — you don’t have to redo the entire test. There is a waiting period between attempts (set by the SAAQ), so it’s always better to prepare thoroughly and pass on the first try.

The course covers the same material, but in a structured way that connects the rules to real-world driving situations. Tips for Test Day
- Bring valid government ID — passport, health card, or permanent resident card. No ID, no test.
- Choose your language — the test is available in French and English. You must select at the time of booking.
- Read each question carefully — SAAQ questions are often scenario-based. The difference between a right and wrong answer can be a single word (“must” vs. “may”).
- Don’t overthink signs — Module 1 tests recognition, not interpretation. If you’ve studied the signs, trust your memory.
- Take a breath before each module — there’s no time pressure. A calm, methodical approach beats rushing.
