Preparing for the SAAQ knowledge test in Québec?

One of the best ways to prepare is to combine studying the official material with practice questions that test whether you actually understand the rules.

Below, you’ll find free SAAQ knowledge test questions and answers covering Québec road rules, safe driving, traffic situations and the format of the Class 5 knowledge test.

These are practice questions created for study purposes. They are not actual questions taken from the SAAQ examination.

What Is on the SAAQ Class 5 Knowledge Test?

The SAAQ divides the Class 5 knowledge test into three areas:

  1. Highway Safety Code
  2. Road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals
  3. Driving behaviours and techniques for passenger vehicles

You need a passing mark of 75% in each section.

This is important: doing extremely well in one part does not compensate for failing another section.

Answer: C — 10 months

What Should You Study for the SAAQ Knowledge Test?

Do not rely only on memorizing practice questions.

The SAAQ recommends preparing with resources including:

  • the Driver’s Handbook
  • Driving a Passenger Vehicle
  • the Road Access Binder
  • SAAQ driving-course modules and exercises
  • the SAAQ road-safety quiz

Practice questions are most useful after you understand the underlying rules.

A Better Way to Practice

Try studying one test section at a time.

Step 1: Highway Safety Code

Review right-of-way, speed, intersections, traffic rules, driver responsibilities and other Québec driving laws.

Step 2: Road Signs and Signals

Learn what signs mean rather than memorizing their appearance alone.

Pay attention to:

  • regulatory signs
  • warning signs
  • construction signs
  • traffic lights
  • pavement markings

Step 3: Driving Situations

This is where understanding becomes especially important.

Practice analyzing:

  • intersections
  • pedestrians
  • cyclists
  • blind spots
  • following distance
  • lane changes
  • winter conditions
  • sharing the road
  • potential hazards

Don’t Just Memorize the Answer

A common mistake is repeatedly doing practice tests until you remember which button to click.

Instead, after every incorrect answer, ask yourself:

Why was my answer wrong?

Then review that rule before continuing.

You are preparing to make safe decisions on the road—not simply to recognize questions.
